The Route

40 days - 12 000 km

1)
Lake Kariba
Although not a natural lake, it is the biggest man-made lake, rich in wildlife ...

2) Lake Mweru
This is the smallest of the 5 lakes, situated in Northern Zambia.

3) Lake Tanganyika
650km long, 60km wide with a deepest point of 1.4km. Average depth of 800m. Volume wise this is the second largest lake in the world.

4) Lake Victoria
Largest lake in Afrika. Circumferance +/- 3500 km.

5) Lake Malawi
560km long and 55km wide. This is the third largest lake in Afrika.

The idea was to, as far as possible, travel around the lakes not using established routes. The crew was camping and a lot of spectacular sunsets and sunrises awaited them.

  • Some of the smaller lakes were also visited.
  • The Livingstone memorial.
  • The chimpanzees in the Mahale National Park in Tanzania.
  • The place where Livingstone and Stanley met each other, at a place next to Lake Tanganyika.
  • A ferry trip to cross Lake Kariba. This ferry can accomodate 16 vechicles and the trip covered 240km ( 22 - 24 hours) accross Kariba. Then onwards from Mllibizi to the small town of Kariba in Zimbabwe. This ferry's last trip was six years ago.
  • The 128m high Kariba damwall. The Zambezi was in flood with the most water in history - the sight of all this water over the damwall was something to see. .
  • From Lake Victoria we crossed the Serengeti, visited Dar es Salaam, and turned South towards Lake Malawi.
